Stream-style water features.

Japanese Style Stream

A simple shallow stream which is fed by a bubble up water feed into the upper pool. The shallow channel winds though between some existing trees to a lower sump pool. The stream bed is lined with smooth slate chips and pebbles. The edges are formed using natural stone pieces set into mortar along with pebbles to hide the liner.

Large rock-edged natural style stream

This is a very large water feature built into an existing sloping site. There is an existing Koi Carp pond that is partly fed by a natural stream piped into it. The water is quite cold all year round, almost too cold to support natural biological filtration. We used a digger to excavate the different pool levels for the stream and to lift the large pieces of Portland stone into place. This used about 12 tonnes of rock. The sides were weeded prior to laying a weed suppressing membrane with slate chips over it. Appropriate planting was set out in the pools and at the sides for effective looks.

Make a water feature work properly: -

An unusual challenge. The quite formal water feature had been constructed using concrete brick paver sides with roofing slates cemented over a liner to feed into an existing shallow but large surface area pond. The small volume pond size limited the possible recyclable water  available for the stream feature. (Based on a maximum pond water turnover of 50% per hour). The formal water feature had never worked properly and had always leaked. We had to remove the old butyl liner and slate pieces in order to get back to firm surfaces. Channels were cut into the concrete bed to receive new stainless steel channel sections that we had made to suit. These were then fixed in place over a new butyl rubber liner and set into place using grey coloured paving slabs as side edgings. New drops and copings were formed to ensure a waterproof finish and good looks.
