There are two websites that you may find useful for supplying your railway sleeper needs. They also show some great use ideas. Although we have not purchased from either of these companies ourselves their sites are quite comprehensive. From a garden designers point of view they are useful for a sleeper size, material and styling reference. Sleepers from reclaimed railway tracks through to new oak, tanalised softwood or imported hardwoods may be suitable for your purposes depending upon the look and use that you require. We understand that some local branches of Travis Perkins and Jewsons' Builders Merchants may also stock sleepers for sale in smaller quantities. This picture of stacks of sleepers is from the site of www.sleepers.com. Click the link to visit their site.
We do not recommend that you use creosoted timbers for decking or any area that you or your friends / customers may wish to sit on! The Tar oozing out of creosoted old railway timbers makes a real mess. It is not easy to clean from paving or brickwork even with special solvent cleaners. If you get tar on your clothing you will need to use a special tar remover to get it out. If you get tar on your skin then wash it off using washing up liquid or a de-greasing type of hand-cleanser and then soap and water. The use of second-hand, creosote dipped tar type old railway sleepers have other possible health implications - see below. Creosote dipped Railway Sleepers for use in Landscaping. From June 30th 2007 EEC & British Dept Trade & Industry ruling: All creosoted railway sleepers can continue to be sold and used safely with some exceptions and guidelines; They MUST NOT be used for children's play areas, toys, garden furniture, picnic tables or inside buildings. Creosoted railway sleepers should not be used where there is a risk of frequent skin contact, or where they may come into contact with foodstuffs. There is no problem with new untreated, or untreated railway sleepers. We sometimes design using second hand railway sleepers, oak or tanalised softwood sleepers for retaining work in gardens and landscaping projects especially for our own clients specific projects. Safety Notes for Creosoted Timbers:- As per the EU Directive 2001/90/EC, Creosote treated timber must not be used where there is a risk of frequent (I.E. often occurring, habitual or constant) skin contact. It should not be used inside buildings, to make any kind of toys, furniture or containers used for growing foodstuffs to be intended for human or animal consumption. Always use gloves when handling creosote treated products. Creosote causes burns to skin and eyes. Ensure that all skin surfaces are protected and that safety eye goggles are used when cutting tar sleepers with hand saws or mechanical cutting equipment. Follow health and safety precautions and wash any contaminated hands or skin thoroughly after completing the task and especially before eating. |
