Making changes to increase the size of the seating area in a substantial size new build detached house.

The house was constructed about 12 months ago and the only work done in the garden was to turf the area with grass and leave a rectangular outer border with bark mulch around the outside. A number of trees were planted by the contractors, some of which had not survived the first growing season.

Our brief was to increase the areas of seating, to level the lawn as far as sensible, create an area behind the garage to take a hot spa tub, form a circle area for a summerhouse in the top corner and provide good shape and design.

These first four pictures show the area along the rear of the house and the typical commercial grey concrete paving slabs that are often used by developers to provide a basic paving and path surface. The picture captions will give you a reference.

We decided to use a brick that was the same as the house as it was still readily available. The new paving will be in Marshalls Heritage "Yorkstone" Colour throughout and for the copings to the walls as so that we create continuity of finish to each area.

Here we have dug out and started to get the scalpings down as the base for the new patio area. The new brickwork walls and steps have been constructed on their footings. The steps will lead up to the lawn area.

Here we have finished the hard landscaping, patio paving, walls, copings and circle and have prepared the ground ready for setting the turf. The low winter sun is casting shadows across the garden and the upper area near the fence was hardly ever in sun  and during one week the ground never thawed out in that area.

Eventually we get to the finished garden, lawn laid, planting in place, weed screen and decorative pine bark mulch on the borders all after a wide range of typical British winter weather from heavy rain to hard frosts.

After a period of about 6 months of a poor dull, damp English Summer the planting has started to establish very well and the range of plant colours are still going strong well into September. This will now establish even further next year.
