Many people suffer from an allergy to bee stings.

For most people a sting from our "domesticated" honey bee is often only a reddened itchy bump after the initial stinging sensation has gone away.

There are many possible antidotes from modern anti-histamine creams and tablets to more traditional ideas that use calamine or vinegar applied to the bump after the sting has been removed.

Unfortunately most bees (unlike wasps, horse and blow-flies, hornets etc.) leave their sting behind in your skin and then fly off to die an agonising death if you haven't killed them first.

However there are many different bee types and there are also a lot of people that suffer reaction to bee stings in a much more violent way. For some it may even be fatal.

That said, our gardens would not be as beautiful or produce such a wide variety of fruits if there were no bees to pollinate the flowers.

We have compiled a list of plants that can be used in gardens which may reduce the number of bees that visit your patch. Due to the very nature of the insect, this means that you may rely more on foliage colour and texture rather than striking scented flowers. Unfortunately for you, it is not possible to keep bees and insects away from your garden completely, as nature will always visit you out of doors!

It would always be a good idea to keep an antihistamine cream in your locked medicine cabinet or case ready for use on any insect bite.

For UK readers, don't forget that stinging nettle rash and inflammation is helped by the old-fashioned remedy of rubbing a juicy young dock leaf over the affected area of skin.

If you have not read the list of plants that the RHS considers poisonous you may wish to follow this link. Poisonous Plants
